Hodgkin-Searle Institute for Instructional Skills

The Hodgkin-Searle Institute is a three-tiered, faculty-led, professional development program designed to enhance the effectiveness of teachers and to provide them with the opportunity to become facilitators and leaders.

  1. The Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) is an intensive, multi-day, small-group experience in which participants are given information about a variety of specific educational theories and methodologies.  Participants then prepare and present mini-lessons that incorporate this new information, and receive feedback from the other participants.  The ISW is part of an international professional development program which originated in Canada and now exists globally. The Center for Teaching hosts ten workshops throughout the year.
  2. The Facilitator Development Workshop (FDW) is a five-day training event to prepare experienced teachers to lead the Instructional Skills Workshop. Participants continue to refine their teaching techniques through the mini-lessons, with guided practice and feedback, as well as develop group facilitation skills.
  3. FDW Leadership Workshop is a five-day training that prepares experienced teachers to lead The Facilitator Development Workshop.
